Vinyl Trellis

One of the most important parts of any beautiful yard or garden are the plants and flowers. They can turn any yard into a beautiful outdoor space and can add splashes of color throughout your yard. There are hundreds of different plants of all different shapes and sizes that you can have in your yard.

Make Your Plants the Star of the Show

While most people may stick to having plants in their garden or in a couple of pots throughout the yard, there are ways to really make your plants the star of the show. If you truly want to go above and beyond with your backyard plants and flowers, you can purchase and use a trellis. A trellis is a structure made of intertwining materials, and is used to support climbing plants. Plants will climb up the intertwining materials, creating a gorgeous visual. There are also different types of trellis for different kinds of plants. Some of the best plants and flowers to use with a trellis include:

  • Tomatoes
  • Vines
  • Lavender
  • Peas
  • Morning Glory
  • Climbing Hydrangea

Now, when you see a trellis, you might initially think that it is a pergola or arbor. While all three of these structures commonly have intertwining materials and can help climbing plants thrive, they are not the same. Some can look a little bit similar, but they are indeed different. A trellis is usually flat and vertical, usually only consisting of a single panel either laid against a wall or supported by posts to stand straight up. An arbor is typically over entry ways or sidewalks, allowing plants to go up the sides and in some cases over the top. Lastly, a pergola is usually larger and will often have a roof.

So while some people might have space for a large pergola or want an arbor, others prefer the simplicity and compact size of a trellis. It is a great space saver, but still allows you to add some elegance and beauty to your yard, without taking up all of your space. Also, the smaller size and simplicity of a trellis also means that they are normally more affordable than building or buying an arbor or pergola.

Of course, there are also many different styles of trellis to meet your needs. Some are taller, some shorter, and they can come in a variety of shapes and designs. While many people will prefer a single panel held up by two posts, other may want the trellis to span an entire wall or act as a screen with plant or flowers growing up the sides.

In addition to helping with climbing plants, these structures can also be a decoration in their own right. Many people will simply use them to spice up a boring wall on the outside of their house, or block out an undesirable view. They are also increasingly being used as garden art, without the need for climbing plants at all.

However, before you can add a trellis to your yard and begin experimenting with climbing plants or garden art, you need to decide what material you want it to be made out of. A wide range of materials can be used to craft a trellis such as wood, bamboo, metal or vinyl.

While each are popular and viable materials for your trellis, many people are beginning to go with vinyl as they see all of the benefits it can bring. The biggest benefit of a vinyl trellis is just how low maintenance it is. Unlike other materials, vinyl is weather-proof and won’t require any sort of staining, painting or sealing. All you have to do to clean or maintain a vinyl trellis is use a hose and maybe wipe it down every now and then. You will also avoid another potentially annoyance such as splitting, chipping, rust, rot or other things that can affect wood and metal.

Another big benefit is that vinyl will stay cool in the summer, while a metal trellis could get very hot and negatively affect the plant. Also, vinyl trellis are also much easier to put together as each piece is designed to fit perfectly with the next. So much so, in fact, that many people will actually be able to build their own vinyl trellis, saving even more money in the process. Other benefits of using vinyl include it’s durability, flexibility and lightweight construction.

It is also important to note that while vinyl is stronger than many other materials, trellis are a little less sturdy if the posts on the ends are not anchored properly. As a result, you want to potentially be careful, even though vinyl is flexible enough to deal with most winds.
